Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, for 5 years between 2011-16 the Whitechapel Gallery ran a highly successful Skills for the Future Traineeship programme, recruiting six Trainees each year to work within six different departments. The placements were funded with a bursary of £14,500 and focused on retaining heritage skills within the sector through work based learning and accreditation.

On-the-job training was supplemented by trips to external peer organisations, internal workshops led by Whitechapel staff, regular mentoring sessions and an accredited diploma in Cultural Heritage.

The programme has an excellent record of alumni employment in the arts sector, bridging a gap between academic qualifications and entry level jobs through practical work training.

We are committed to finding ways to build on the experience of delivering this programme, and to promoting employability initiatives in the arts sector. Please check back for future updates under our Work Placements section.
