AFI’s 2017 programme focuses on the theme of collaboration.

Luis Lázaro Matos’ (b. 1987, Portugal) animation The Nomadic City of Camela (2017) is based on his short story about a mobile city built on the three humps of a camel. The city has been conceived in great detail by its urban planners to preserve the precarious symbiosis between the city and camel, and between its citizens.

The collaborative duo Zheng Mahler (Royce Ng, b. 1983, Australia and Daisy Bisenieks, b. 1983, Australia) use 3D animation to retrace the streets of the Sham Shui Po market district of Hong Kong in Deep Water (2017). The camera wanders through the invisible paths of the streams that once ran through the area.

Nguyen Phuong Linh’s (b. 1985, Vietnam), Memory of the Blind Elephant (2016) follows the social and geographic transformation of the ex-colonial rubber plantations in Central and Southern Vietnam. The rubber trees, human beings, animals and land all bear the quiet evidence of a complex history.

Luis Lázaro Matos is selected by MAAT Lisbon; Zheng Mahler by Para/Site, Hong Kong; Nguyen Phuong Linh by Hanoi/DOCLAB.
