Infra-

After different bodies of works exploring the question of the individual within the group, Rebecca Topakian looked for a technique that would allow her to photograph the sense of loneliness one can find in the state of trance in parties. In her series “Infra-”, she uses a digital camera she modified in order for it to be sensitive to infra- red light. In the darkness of dance parties, she illuminates her subjects by using an infrared led panel, invisible to the human eye but visible to the camera, allowing her to act discreetly. The subjects then reveal themselves in moments of abandonment, far from any staging, and offer the viewer portraits of self-forgetfulness and surrender – «non-portraits».

Rebecca Topakian:

After two bachelors degrees in Philosophy and Geography, Rebecca Topakian continued her research at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles (ENSP) graduating in 2015. Playing with the boundaries between visual arts and the documentary form, her work aims to point, through different forms, the possibility of representation of personal identity in its relation to group, community or collective history. Her work has been exhibited in France and abroad. In Jericho, Palestine, she co-founded el-Atlal, an artists residency, writers and reseachers.
