The Whitechapel Gallery is the cumulative work of five architectural practices working over more than a century in an area of constant change - formed by successive waves of migrants and investments. Drawing on the work of Witherford Watson Mann Architects at the Gallery and other recent projects, William Mann argues the case for incrementalism in architecture and urban design, considering the making and remaking of the city and its buildings.

William Mann is a director of Witherford Watson Mann Architects. The practice has built in London for Amnesty International UK and the Whitechapel Gallery, and has prepared a number of public space strategies in London, including the Bankside Urban Forest, and contributing to the Olympic Legacy Masterplan. Their most recent project, for the Landmark Trust, salvages the ruins of Astley Castle, binding ten centuries of piecemeal construction into a strong new construction. William has written on cities, regeneration and architecture for international publications including Archis, Architecture and Urbanism, Architecture Today, and Oase, and has contributed to the Flanders Architecture Yearbook and “London’s Turning: the Making of Thames Gateway”.
