Artist Mary-Ruth Walsh and writer and filmmaker Katherine Waugh use film, audio and text to explore the radical structure and multiple conceptual layers of issues 5 and 6 of Aspen Magazine from 1967, conceived by artist Brian O’Doherty.

O'Doherty's interest in philosophy, literature, and musical composition, alongside his own practice in art and writing, will be used in this presentation as a springboard to map the extraordinary curatorial achievement of his Aspen, and to trace the expanded cultural foundations and influence of what some have referred to as 'the first conceptual exhibition'.

Aspen 5 + 6 most notably brought together under O'Doherty's editorial and commissioning guidance, many of the giants of the 60's art scene, but also uniquely positioned them in a complex and highly inventive network with the most influential writers and composers of the 20th century.

Contributors to Aspen 5 & 6 include Marcel Duchamp, Samuel Beckett, John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Hans Richter, Sol Lewitt, Mel Bochner, Naum Gabo, Laszlo  Moholy-Nagy, Dan Graham, George Kubler, Robert Morris, William Burroughs, Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Morton Feldman, Michel Butor,  Tony Smith and Merce Cunningham.
