Enter the international world of art, with Whitechapel Gallery Director Iwona Blazwick as your guide. Be it artist’s studio, museum, biennale or artfair you will be introduced to the public and the private spaces of art, their entry points, structures and their gatekeepers.  The day will map key events and institutions around the world; and examine the role of the curator as selector, critic, publisher, fundraiser and advocate.  This crash course also offers guidelines for setting up your own space, self publishing and fundraising, and will feature contributions from Achim Borchardt-Hume, Chief Curator, Rachel Mapplebeck, Head of Communications and Kirsty Ogg, Curator.   

Iwona Blazwick has been Director of the Whitechapel Gallery since 2001, leading its expansion in 2009.  She was formerly Head of Exhibitions and Displays at Tate Modern and Director of Exhibitions at London ’s ICA . She also worked as an independent curator in Europe and Japan . She has curated and commissioned numerous solo and thematic exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.  As a commissioning editor for Phaidon Press she devised their Contemporary Artists Monographs and Themes and Movements series. She is series editor of Whitechapel/MIT Press Documents of Contemporary Art.

A critic, lecturer and broadcaster, Iwona Blazwick has written on the key artists, tendencies and institutions of our time. 

She has served on many juries including the Turner Prize and the Venice Biennale Golden Lion jury. She is Chair of the Mayor of London’s Cultural Strategy Group and an advisor to the Government Art Collection. 

She was awarded an OBE in 2008 and has honorary degrees from the London Metropolitan University, Plymouth University and Goldsmiths College.
