With the invention of photography in 1839, the French painter Delaroche was said to declare, ‘From today painting is dead.’ Central to art today, photography now exists alongside painting in the world’s major galleries and museums. But what separates fine art photography from photojournalism, commercial photography and personal snapshots? This course provides an overview of the major developments in the history of photography, explores key innovators and current trends.
