Artist Information
Originally from the USA, Susan Hiller has lived and worked in London since the 1970s during which time her work has greatly influenced a whole new generation of artists. Inspired by art movements such as Fluxus, Minimalism and Surrealism and informed by an early study of Anthropology, Hiller's work presents a free-flowing narrative, juxtaposing and combining such formative influences into a powerfully articulate visual survey of both the mundane and the extraordinary.
Her highly successful recent Tate Britain retrospective showed works such as Witness (2000), in which a jungle of suspended audio speakers render the sound of people describing encounters with extra-terrestrials, From the Freud Museum (1991-96), a cabinet of curiosities made up of 50 archaeological storage boxes filled with memento-mori, relics and talisman and Dedicated to the Unknown Artists (1972-76), a display of found, old, delicately tinted postcards depicting stormy seas along the English coast line - a political sub-text is often palpable in her work.
Hiller has exhibited at Timothy Taylor Gallery, London, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Der Deutsche Bundestag, Berlin among many others world-wide and her works are held in collections at Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Henry Moore Sculpture Foundation, Leeds, Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Tate Britain and the V&A, London.
