Artist Information

Gauri Gill is a Delhi-based photographer who is most known for her capturing of different groups such as the diasporic Indian community in America, rural villagers in north west India and Afghani Indians in Delhi to create her own ‘family albums’. Gill has studied at Delhi College of Art, New Delhi, Parsons School of Design, New York and Stanford University, California where she was awarded one of the five artist’s fellowships. Since completing her studies in 2002, Gill’s work has been exhibited widely in India, Europe and the US.

Over the past ten years, Gauri Gill has focused her attention on marginalised, rural communities in Rajasthan. A Balika Mela is a fair organised exclusively for young girls, in 2003 Gill worked with an NGO group that in addition to providing all the usual attractions of a fair was aiming to raise awareness of the electoral process by holding mock elections. Gill set up a temporary studio in the fair where girls were encouraged to come and have their photograph taken with props and accessories of their own choosing. The image used in this stunning edition is part of this project.
