Artist Information

Donald Urquhart was born in 1963 in Scotland. An artist, performer and writer, his black and white drawings in pen and ink feature legendary screen actresses, drag queens, torch- song sirens and literary figures, whose public personas are often referenced in a wry line of text. His drawings have a graphic immediacy, honed whilst producing posters and flyers for the underground drag club scene in the late 80s and 90s, in which he collaborated with the legendary performance artist, Leigh Bowery. Made using brush and ink, they have a retro look which reflects his interest in early 20^th century illustrators like Aubrey Beardsley

Urquhart’s work is held in the collections of the British Council, the Government Art Collection and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
