Paul Graham (born in England in 1956), is one of the leading figures currently working in fine art photography. In a career that has spanned nearly 30 years, Graham has played a crucial role in the development of photography as a medium. His innovative approach to image making has reinvented traditional genres of photography to create a unique visual language.
Graham’s work came to prominence in the late 1970s with his first solo show at the Arnolfini, Bristol. He has gone on to exhibit work nationally and internationally including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Tate Gallery, London. Graham’s work is held in significant collections including Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Arts Council England and V&A, London. The exhibition at Whitechapel is the first mid-career survey of Paul Graham’s images from the 1980s to the present day.
Graham was awarded the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2009 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010. He currently lives and works in New York City and is the author of over 14 books including the 12 volume a shimmer of possibility.
