Artist Information

Born in Tuscon, Arizona, Raymond Pettibon lives and works outside of Los Angeles.  One of the most influential artists to emerge from the LA punk scene in the 1990s, Pettibon started off designing album covers and flyers for his artist friends and musicians. He has become internationally recognised for his prolific output of drawings, which are characterised by a comic book aesthetic of figurative images combined with short, enigmatic texts. These drawings pull freely from a wide range of sources, including music, politics, religion, art history, film, literature and sports, as well as imagery taken from popular underground cultures, such as surfers, trains, baseball players and cartoon characters. Pettibon's work offers a view of both the allure and the darker side of American culture.

Raymond Pettibon exhibits internationally and his work has been featured in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Museu d'Art Contemporani in Barcelona, the Kunstahalle Vienna, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Tokyo Opera City Gallery.
