An innovator in the Asian Underground scene, British DJ and producer Sam Zaman (State Of Bengal ) will be performing a unique mixture of Bengali folk and Western dance music with guests DJ Badmarsh and Nulpho.
Born in Bangladesh, Sam (State of Bengal ) grew up in Stepney, London though his musical influences were fueled by a visit to Bangladesh and his interactions with traditional musicians and dancers. He has written and produced tracks with Matt Mars as well as working with Björk, who invited him open for her world tour, and remix her track "Hunter." In September 1997, she signed him onto the One Little Indian record label.
State of Bengal has worked on two significant projects collaborating with musicians from Bengal, including Indian sitar innovator Ananda Shankar and Baul singer Paban Das Baul. Skip Ij is Sam’s most recent album which features a track written by the revolutionary poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and sung by British Bengali artist Suzana Ansar.
DJ Badmarsh was born in Bombay of Indian and moved to the east end of London at the age of seven. His music described as dark break-beats laced with sitars, tablas and experimental ambient beats is an authentic reflection of both his backgrounds, as an Asian kid growing up in the East End, and later as a house DJ at Labyrinth in East London .
‘I Am That Type of Badmarsh’ was his first release for Outcaste, a label set up to promote ‘left-field Asian beats’. Prior to signing with Outcaste, Badmarsh released house tracks as ‘ Easy Mo ’ on Pure Vibes, a label he ran from home. After interest from Dorado Records and the omnipotent Mo'Wax, he released an EP with Ubiquity.
In a musical climate where it's in vogue to trawl the depths of Indian music, and where nearly every new dance track comes courtesy of a 'Bombay Mix', Badmarsh has no fears of being usurped. "I think Asian sounds give music so much flavour," he explains. "But until now it's been a great untapped, unexplored area of music. As long as the music's good, I'm happy - it doesn’t matter who actually makes it.”
Tickets will be available to purchase on the doors to tonight's event from 8pm, the entrance is located in Angel Alley next the the Gallery off Whitechapel High Street. Music begins at 8.30pm and is expected to finish at 1am.
