Concessions and members are kindly asked to show proof or ID when collecting tickets. Working in association with the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, artist Kevin Quigley has invited avant-garde drummer and percussionist Charles Hayward (This Heat), jazz experimentalist and vibes player Orphy Robinson and artist / performer Marc Vaulbert De Chantilly to devise and produce a series of performances evoking the magical energies and heart rending sounds of bells.
Using field recordings and an array of percussion instruments the collaborators explore links between the16th century nursery rhyme, 'Oranges and Lemons' and its local East London origins as well as the secrets of geomancy and Ley lines which link a number of churches, including St Mary Le Bow, St Paul's Cathedral and St Dunstan's in Stepney.
Orphy Robinson
Vibraphonist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, Orphy Robinson is an acclaimed soloist. He consistently works across a variety of eclectic musical forms, from jazz, free jazz, free improvisation to jazz fusion and funk. For this performance Orphy will explore the material and elements of percussive sound. Creating bouts or moments of primal percussion he aims to expose the elemental sounds of the vibraphone, steel pan, various bells and percussion instruments, stretching and manipulating the sounds of the bells throughout the performance.

Charles Hayward
A pioneer of new and genre breaking music for over 30 years, Charles Hayward's projects include This Heat, Camberwell now, Quiet Sun, About and collaborations with musicians including Robert Wyatt, Fred Frith and Lol Coxhill. Charles has also created a series of interventional art/music works for LABAN dance theatre called 'Out of Body Orchestra' and formed sound installations works for the ICA, Deptford x and the Albany Theatre.
Charles says 'Since childhood bells have fascinated me - the sound seems to truly have a life of its own, unfolding and blossoming at its own pace, the frequencies clear and isolated from any emotional content that the person sounding the bell might want to impose upon the slow fading, making listening the most active part of the process - the arcane forging which gives each bell its distinctive character.’
For this piece Charles Hayward creates a 'bell installation' created by a range of bells he has collected over the years, including fire bells and burglar alarms.
