For over a century the Whitechapel Gallery has premiered world-class artists from modern masters such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo to contemporaries such as Sophie Calle, Gilbert & George, William Kentridge, Sarah Lucas, Gerhard Richter and Cindy Sherman.

With beautiful galleries, exhibitions, artist commissions, collection displays, historic archives, education resources, inspiring art courses, restaurant and bookshop, the Gallery is open all year round (opening subject to government guidelines), so there is always something free to see.

The Gallery is taking part in the government initiative ‘Kick Start’ programme, and has a placement available. This is a 6 months placement and open ONLY to applicants coming through Kick Start programme via DWP & Job Centres.

Overview

The Commercial Enterprises Assistant placement is an opportunity to work across Whitechapel Gallery Ventures Limited, the trading subsidiary company through which commercial income for the Whitechapel Gallery is channelled.

The Commercial Enterprises Assistant will gain an insight into the working of administration, generating income through the Gallery’s assets, whether that’s the building, exhibitions or IP. The Director of Commercial Enterprises also manages the relationship with the onsite Restaurant and Bookshop, both are outsourced and run by external companies. So, there is an opportunity for the Commercial Enterprises Assistant to learn more about working relationships with external companies.

The Commercial Enterprises Assistant will also have the opportunity to be mentored by the highly experienced Ventures team including the Director and Heads of Departments.

The Commercial Enterprises Assistant will gain work experience across the busy Ventures, Editions and Publications department principally supporting the Editions Officers and the wider team as required.

Conditions of Work

  • Contract: Fixed term 6-months contract from September 2021 – March 2022
  • Hours of work: 25 hours per week, days TBC. Whitechapel Gallery working hours are 9:30am – 5:45pm, Monday to Friday. Some occasional weekend and evening work may be required and will be compensated by time off in lieu.
  • Location: Whitechapel Gallery, 77 Whitechapel High Street, E1 7QX along with some remote working
  • Salary: £10.85 gross per hour.
