To mark the publication of his new book Berlin Bodies (Reaktion Books), exploring the extraordinary corporeal history of the city, author Stephen Barber will give an illustrated talk on Berlin’s intensive rapport with film and its distinctive spaces of filmic projection, from the 1890s experiments of the Skladanowsky Brothers in Berlin’s Prenzlauerberg district, to the demands of filming the contemporary city. He will also give a reading from the book, which takes a deep look into the filmic dimensions of Berlin’s histories of riots, ruins, wastelands, nightclubs, crowds, cacophonies, architectural utopias and urban spectacles.
The event will include screenings of several rare short films of Berlin, including the first-ever UK-screening of Gunter Jordan’s legendary DDR punk-era film, Scream Once a Week.
Stephen Barber is the acclaimed author of many books on art, film and cities, including Fragments of the European City, Projected Cities, and Performance Projections. He is a Professor at Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, and a Visiting Professor at the Free University Berlin.
