April sees a solo show from one of Bangladesh’s most dynamic and inspiring contemporary artists. Nazia Andaleeb Preema received her Masters in ‘Drawing and Painting’ from the University of Dhaka in 2000 and has since received global recognition for her conceptual dexterity and her prolific and high calibre output. She explores issues of women’s representation that fuses traditional and digital techniques. She creates poetic visual metaphors on canvas. Bold and innovative, her work celebrates both beauty and freedom for women, incorporating new media such as performance, video installation and digital art. Preema has participated in several art residency programmes and has been awarded major awards as well as international grants to continue developing her work. In this exhibition, Preema is representing herself as the mirror of others in our society, where we are all engrossed in self-love. She states, “The truth is most of us are narcissists. However in another perspective, it is evident that it is “we”, ourselves who make the biggest difference in our journey, so we better love who we are!” Her self-portraits and deconstructions provide a visual narration of her journey as a single woman through bravery, ownership and self-love. Along with 20 solo exhibitions (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, USA, UK, Turkey, Morocco, Uzbekistan), she has also enriched her career by participating in 5 Asian Art Biennales, Fukuaka Museum Residency, 2 Tashkent Biennales, Istanbul Biennale, Venice International Art Expo (2010, 2012, 2014) along with prestigious art fairs (Art Basel Miami, Tuyup Art Fair/Istanbul, Dubai Art Festival, Dhaka Art Summit, Delhi International Art Festival). She represented Bangladesh at the 58th La Biennale de Venezia in 2019. Preema is passionate about encouraging the upcoming generation and is an acclaimed speaker at educational institutions and electronic media of the country. She lives and work in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Preview, Performance and Book Launch:

Join us for a special preview and late opening of the exhibition on Thursday 6th April.This will include a live performance by the artist, with a Q&A by acclaimed theatre director Mukul Ahmed. These will be followed with short talks by special guests Farrukh Dhondy and Martin Bradley. This is a great opportunity to meet this innovative, high profile artist and discover more about the work in this exhibition as well as her wider output. Refreshments will be available.
The Brady Arts & Community Centre is a just a 5-minute walk from Whitechapel Station and 10 minutes from Aldgate East and Liverpool Street. Up the road from the centre is Brick Lane leading to Spitalfields.
