Artist Emma Hart is joined by writer Stefan Golaszewski in conversation with Judith Carlton: together they discuss being human, strangers and making work. Hart and Golaszewski’s different practices both expose the dark humour of the every day.
Emma Hart is the sixth winner of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women. The biannual award, established in 2005, is a collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery, Max Mara and Collezione Maramotti.
This event is part of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women 2015-17.
Emma Hart lives and works in London. In 2015 she was awarded a Paul Hamlyn Foundation award for Visual Art. Hart was shortlisted for The Jarman Awards in 2013, and awarded a Random Acts commission. In 2012 she was shortlisted for the Jerwood / Film and Video Umbrella Awards: Tomorrow Never Knows, with an exhibition at Jerwood Space, London. Hart was resident at Camden Arts Centre with her Question Department in 2009 and for The Forest residency at Wysing Arts Centre in 2012. She received an MA in Fine Art from the Slade in 2004 and completed her PhD in Fine Art at Kingston University in 2013.
Hart is a lecturer on BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.
Stefan Golaszewski was writer/performer for Cowards (BBC4, 2009); writer/creator/executive producer for Him & Her (BBC3, 2010-13), winning the BAFTA for Best Sitcom and a Writers’ Guild Award; writer/creator/executive producer for Mum (BBC2, 2016). His plays include The Stefan Golaszewski Plays (Bush Theatre, 2009-10) and Sex With a Stranger (Trafalgar Studios, 2012).
Judith Carlton is Director at CGP London (Cafe Gallery Projects), an artist-led, non-profit art gallery and charity spread across two unique venues in the heart of Southwark Park, Bermondsey.
Previously Carlton was the Assistant Director at Matt’s Gallery, London and Gallery Manager at Cubitt Gallery and Studios, London. She has also held positions at the Serpentine Galleries, London and The Hatton Gallery, Newcastle.
A publicly funded organisation and Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, CGP London was founded in the 1983 by the Bermondsey Artists’ Group, and now encompasses the modernist exhibition space Cafe Gallery and Dilston Grove, a poured-concrete church converted into an exhibition space.
