Anna Maria Maiolino’s significance for the history of art in Brazil from the 1960s onward cannot be underestimated. The artist who continues to be a prolific producer of new work – sculpture, drawing, performance, photography and beyond – is in conversation with curator and Art Historian Dr Michael Asbury on the occasion of her major exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery.

About Michael Asbury

Dr Michael Asbury is an art historian, art critic and curator based in London. He is Reader in the Theory and History of Art at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London (UAL) and founding member of the research centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN), where Anna Maria Maiolino delivered the inaugural lecture for the centre’s ongoing Open Lecture series. Over the last twenty years Michael has written extensively on themes pertaining to modern and contemporary art with a particular emphasis on Brazilian culture.

He edited the book ‘Anna Maria Maiolino: Order and Subjectivity’, Pharos Publishers, Nicosia (2009) as well as publishing several articles and essays on her work, for: Padiglione d’Arte Contemporea, Milan (2019), Flash Art International (2015), Fontanals-Cisneiros, Miami (2014), ANPAP, Rio de Janeiro (2012), Dardo Journal, Santiago de Compostela and Rio de Janeiro, (2006), Parasol-Unit, London (2004) and ESCALA (formally UECLAA), University of Essex (2003). He has curated exhibitions of the Maiolino’s work in Europe and Brazil at institutions such as: Pharos Contemporary Art (2007), Camberwell College of Arts (2008), Galeria Millan (2010), and was co-curator for her exhibition Continuum at Camden Arts Centre (2010).
