Performance and Music

Aldgate Square plays host to unexpected pop-up outdoor performances from SHE Choir, Stop Shopping Choir and The London Lucumi Choir during the evening, representing a very small section of the incredible diversity of choirs and voices in the capital which have brought sections of the community together through collective singing.

The London Lucumi Choir are a Community Choir which sing songs from the Afro-Cuban Diaspora, specifically songs for the Orisha accompanied by traditional drums. We were formed in 2007, have released 4 albums and have performed in venues large and small all over the UK and also in Cuba. The London Lucumi Choir will preview a few tracks for from their next release, including a song sequence for Yewa, the Orisha of decay and renewal, associated with the after-life. Previous projects have included working with Greenwich’s Maritime Museum and a collaboration with Otura Mon’s Ife; a project based in New Orleans.  The choir’s repertoire is arranged by founder/director Daniela De Armas.

Stop Shopping Choir UK is a new activist community choir performing uplifting songs and taking action for people and planet! Last year, they joined New York’s “Reverend Billy and The Church of Stop Shopping” on a UK tour to the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow – singing alongside them both on stage and in the streets. They were so inspired that they vowed to keep going and create their own choir, and are now performing, putting on shows and joining protests across London.

SHE Choir London is a volunteer-run choir for women and non-binary people based in Aldgate. Singing original arrangements of pop, rock, R&B and more, they put their unique spin on favourites from Destiny’s Child to Carly Simon (with a bit of Human League along the way)! In previous years, they’ve performed at Women of the World festival at Southbank Centre, and sung on Women’s Hour on BBC Radio 4.
