The Press Cutting Collection
Whitechapel Gallery Archive’s press-cutting collection contains materials spanning 1897 to present-day. The collection consists of cuttings, illustrations and images from a wide range of publications, many of which have ceased. The collection systematically documents the activities of the Whitechapel Gallery, including its exhibition history, past programmes, partners and collaborators. Through the Gallery’s relationship with the local area, it also offers insight into the broader social history of East London.
Most of the press cuttings are bound in the albums and arranged chronologically. Much of the earlier collection has become very fragile over time. Thanks to the generous support of the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art, the historical collection cuttings from 1956 or prior has been digitised. Materials from 1957 onwards remain accessible on-site at our Reading Room.
You can see digitised collection below. For further description of the collection, and our collection , you can see the Catalogue of the Archive Holdings HERE.
