Capital Expansion 2009 - Whitechapel Gallery
vis image 10

Whitechapel Gallery is situated in a Grade II* listed and purpose-built gallery, originally designed by Charles Harrison Townsend in 1901.

In 2009 a major capital expansion project was undertaken to incorporate the adjacent former Passmore Edwards library building into the main Gallery, providing increased capacity to present ambitious new work across expanded gallery spaces and new purposebuilt education, community and archive spaces.

Our historic building now encompasses seven exhibition spaces, a fully equipped auditorium as well as a variety of study and studio spaces, including an archive space, which offers an invaluable resource for artists, academics, historians and students. We are also home to a specialist bookshop, managed by Koenig Books, and Alba Cafe.
