We are delighted that the eighth Art Icon Gala and Auction will celebrate the remarkable achievements of Yinka Shonibare CBE and support Whitechapel Gallery’s pioneering youth programmes and educational activities.
To protect the safety and welfare of all attendees the event will be hosted on a virtual event platform.
The evening will include a special performance by four-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo.
An online auction of artworks donated by leading contemporary artists will also take place with our Art Icon auction partner, Phillips.
All funds raised through the event and auction will benefit Whitechapel Gallery’s pioneering education and community programmes.

Townsend, the restaurant that opened inside Whitechapel Gallery in February 2020, have worked closely with Yinka Shonibare CBE to create a menu for the evening to be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home.
Townsend have been sending out gourmet dinner boxes UK-wide since April 2020 and they have been featured in publications such as TimeOut, The Guardian, Sunday Times and GQ.
With their dinner boxes, all the hard work is done for you – so all that is required is to heat the dishes up and enjoy during the event!
Unfortunately the deadline to order a dinner box has now passed.
The menu for the evening will be:
Chicken & spicy peanut curry with yoghurt-baked sweet potato
Vegan option; Spinach & plantain curry with braised okra
Served with flatbread, hard-boiled egg and salsa
Spiced honey cake with almond and yoghurt
Vegan option; Spiced ginger & date pudding with oat cream custard
Choice of wine or soft drink
The deadline to register to receive the publication and tote bag in advance of the event has unfortunately now passed. Guests who register after 23rd February will receive these items post-event and will be posted internationally on request.
