This intensive 2.5 day course provides an essential introduction to collecting and includes key steps to building a collection and clear guidance on how to navigate the market with confidence.

Taught through sessions and visits we look at the complex eco-system of the art world, from art schools and artists to not-for-profit and commercial galleries and auction houses. With opportunities to meet and discuss the art of collecting with artists, gallerists and leading collectors this course will help you to identify current trends in contemporary art.

At Home with Contemporary Art: Meet the Collectors 
2.30 – 5.30pm, Central London

We start the course with the exclusive opportunity to visit the home of an established contemporary art collector. Collector and philanthropist Valeria Napoleone offers a tour and insight into her collection, its personal and social significance. We discuss Napoleone’s new initiative Valeria Napoleone XX and decipher the roles and realities of collecting.

10am   What contemporary art looks like now with Lydia Yee
Whitechapel Gallery Chief Curator Lydia Yee brings her vast experience of curating exhibitions internationally and current work on the British Art Show, to give an overview of current trends of artists working today and possibilities for the future.

11.40am   How to own art with Louisa Buck
Author, critic and collector, Buck identifies and unpicks some key areas that any collector needs to know:

  • where to buy it
  • what to do with it
  • how to insure it
  • how to move it
  • how to care for it

2.30pm   Why collect? with Sonja Junkers
We are joined by art advisor Junkers, previously of Hauser & Wirth, who contemplates the ‘why’ of collecting; offering ideas on establishing frameworks to base your collection around, explores the role of the collector in the arena of contemporary art, together with practical tips on navigating art fairs for all budgets, the art of negotiation and how to network.

10am   Meet the Makers
A trip to the RA Schools (Burlington Gardens), the only fully funded art school in the UK, to meet and discuss supporting early career artists directly. [artists tbc]

12.30pm   Meet the Dealers
We visit two contemporary spaces, one well know and one more hidden, and gain an insight into the role of a gallerist. Edel Assanti (Berners Mews) demonstrate the differences between working with newer collectors and how the newer spaces differ from more established older generation.

2pm   Lunch

3pm   
Established and internationally respected gallerist talks about knowing where to invest and deciphering the exhibitions, biennales, art fairs and openings.

4.30pm   Under the Hammer with Christies
What is it really like to buy and sell art at auction? Discuss auction etiquette and buying tips with leading specialists from the world’s most successful art business. Includes a preview tour of the current display.

5.30pm   Closing thoughts over drinks – optional

The course fee includes:
