Join artist Clare Qualmann to creatively explore the unique environment of Mile End Park through the fun and poetic prompts of walking scores.
Slowly walk along the edge of the shadow of a tree… this simple prompt is part of a series of walking scores developed through workshops with east London based artists and teachers in collaboration with artist Clare Qualmann.
Take time out of the city bustle to experience the park in a new way by trying out some of the written scores and creating your own; taking a fun, meditative and creative approach to nature connection that starts with playful interaction and deep observation to build new and stronger connections with this unique landscape.
Through the afternoon you can expect to use a series of creative scores to slow down and notice things in the park that we might usually miss, use our senses to connect with sights, smells and textures, experiment with moving creatively to share different ways of spending time and enjoying green spaces.
This event is part of A Grey and Green Place, a collaboration between Whitechapel Gallery and London Parks and Gardens creatively exploring local communities’ relationships with Mile End Park in east London as part of Backyard Biennial: East.

Clare Qualmann‘s work has a long-standing connection to East London and to walking that seeks to step aside from the everyday as a way to take notice. Clare works with others to highlight and celebrate the extraordinary in the ordinary, the aesthetic of the overlooked and the magic of encountering the unexpected within the routine. It’s an art practice that insists that public space is for everyone to use and enjoy and a key location for creativity and art making.
The walking score is a medium and method rich with possibilities for engaging with people and place; offering routes into creative practice, nature connection, stories, histories and other narratives of place. Working between ideas, action, words and movement, practices of scoring create iterative connections that can forge new ways of experiencing place.
London Parks and Gardens is a small charity with a big mission to champion London’s historic parks, gardens, squares, and other green spaces for the benefit of everyone.
Through research and recording the histories of green spaces across the capital, advocating for the interests of historic green space in planning processes and celebrating London’s hidden greens spaces in an annual Open Gardens Weekend, they raise awareness of the vital place of our urban green spaces.
