From 2022-23, Whitechapel Gallery collaborated on the second phase of 2.8 Million Minds – a project originally convened by artist and mental health activist the vacuum cleaner.
Inspired by disability justice and mad pride, and motivated by the rising challenge of mental health for young people today, 2.8 Million Minds was an action based research process to support young people to make art and activism that changes how mental health is experienced and supported.
A collaboration with Chisenhale Gallery, artists Amina Jama, Cecilia Wee and the vacuum cleaner, and more than 30 young artists connected to Tower Hamlets – this six month long co-curation process culminated in a sharing at Whitechapel Gallery in August 2023, Should we fix something that never really worked?
The sharing was a care, joy and rage filled cabaret of song, poetry, films, drawing, and call to action for those with power to reimagine and reform mental health support for young people today.
