Maria Fusco is the first Writer in Residence at Whitechapel Gallery, launching the annual residency programme as a platform for writing about art, writing as art and writing as a lens through which to view art. Throughout the year Fusco will curate a series of conversations, workshops, readings, screenings and courses and a festival. She will also be producing a book of short stories, which will be published in Spring 2010 at the end of her residency.
Fusco contributes to a broad range of international publications, most recently Copy Work (Vancouver: Contemporary Art Gallery); Fully Booked: Cover Art and Design for Books (Berlin: Gestalten) and Hey Hey Glossolalia (New York: Creative Time). She is editor of The Happy Hypocrite, a new bi-annual journal for and about experimental art writing, launched in 2008.
‘The Happy Hypocrite is already cloaked in the aura of legend and celebrated as one of the last bastions of experimentation.’ Kaleidoscope magazine, 2009)
Maria Fusco is Director of Art Writing at Goldsmiths, London where she leads the MFA Art Writing, and is currently critic in residence at The Kadist Art Foundation, Paris.
‘Maria is creating a vanguard in the relationship between language and visual arts that is undoubtedly of significance, and suffused with humour, absurdity and a serious playfulness.’ Kit Hammonds, freelance curator and tutor, Curating Department, Royal College of Art, London.
