The London Open will provide a snapshot of art in London now, showcasing some of the most dynamic work being made across the capital to an international audience. This new incarnation of the Whitechapel Gallery's triennial open submission exhibition is open to all artists aged 26 or over living and working in the London postal district. The first edition of The London Open was selected by editor of Art Monthly Patricia Bickers, artist Rodney Graham, collector Jack Kirkland, curator Marta Kuzma and Whitechapel Gallery curator Kirsty Ogg.
There was an overwhelming response to the call for entries for the 2012 exhibition with over 1800 applications being received from artists living all over London and working in a wide variety of media. The selection took place in late January and was extremely rigorous. With a very high standard of work submitted and limited space in the galleries it was simply not possible to accommodate the work of as many artists as the panel would have liked.
The final selection has now been made and the Gallery is delighted to announce that the following artists will be participating in the first edition of The London Open .

2012 marks the 80th anniversary of open submission shows at the Whitechapel Gallery. These exhibitions have showcased artists early in their careers who have later gone on to achieve great prominence such as Antony Gormley, Cornelia Parker and Rachel Whiteread.
The Gallery would like to extend it’s thanks to all those who applied for The London Open for the time and effort that they put into their application and for their support of this historic exhibition.
