Past Event
On the eve of great change (or not) we present visions of an alternative Britain – past and future – through the insurgent analogue film practices of Stanley Schtinter and Susu Laroche, and accompanied by the remarkable sonic melancholies of Adam Christensen, performing live in the auditorium.
This evening will feature a selection of their collaborative pieces, with their respective visual and sonic ‘anti-works’: including films made by Laroche with performance duo New Noveta, and the ‘endless’ films of Schtinter, with the first look at his ‘un-documentary’ on Princess Diana’s second funeral (a word-for-word recreation was held by the artist in Salford in 2018).
Screenings are followed by a Q&A with Laroche, Schtinter and Whitechapel Gallery’s Adjunct Film Curator Gareth Evans, with the evening concluding in a short performance by artist Adam Christensen (who appears in Laroche’s Nasty Piece Of Work).

Schtinter is an artist and writer whose most recent work, Hotel Bardo, was dubbed by Iain Sinclair “the last avant-garde anti-project at the end of time”. His 2018 recreation of Princess Diana’s funeral (with a Mexican mariachi band in Salford) was widely celebrated as “the people’s vote Turner Prize winner”, and hailed by London Review of Books, The Guardian, The Daily Star and more. He also runs the anti-record label (anti-everything), purge.xxx.
Chaos Rule Us is an anagram of the artist’s birth name, Susu Laroche. She is a multi-disciplinary artist working with analogue 35mm, 16mm and sound from her studio in London. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and festivals internationally (ICA, Somerset House, Samawah Iraq, Nihilist Film Festival). On Halloween in 2017, she released her own interpretation of the tarot deck with purge.xxx, along-side a survey of her films at Close-Up Film Centre.
Adam Christensen is a London-based artist who makes performance, video, fabric and text works, and performs with the music project Ectopia, which was Wysing Arts Centre’s band-in-residence in 2016. He has previously performed and presented work at Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen, Baltic Triennial as well as Almanac, David Roberts Art Foundation, Southard Reid, London, Institute of Contemporary Arts and Hollybush Gardens in London.
