Fierce and Fearless is a textile installation celebrating women as central figures in folklore, myth and legend. Printed and embroidered panels form an immersive tent, illustrated with stories of fearless female protagonists and offering a hub for participatory activities throughout the season. Step inside, join an activity, create new stories.
Fierce and Fierce will host school and university groups, and sessions led by local charities and community groups, including the British Bilingual Poetry Collective, 3EIB, Xenia. The installation’s fabric is the inspiration for a collective embroidery project led by artist Jasmin Bhanji in Assembly Room during the half-term holidays (29 October-2 November).
Joy Gregory is a graduate of Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. She has developed a practice which is concerned with social and political issues with particular reference to history and cultural differences in contemporary society.
As a photographer she makes full use of the media from video, digital and analogue photography to Victorian print processes. In 2002, Gregory received the NESTA Fellowship, which enabled her the time and the freedom to research for a major piece around language endangerment. The first of this series was the video piece Gomera, which premiered at the Sydney Biennale in May 2010.
She is the recipient of numerous awards and has exhibited all over the world showing in many festivals and biennales. Her work included in many collections including the UK Arts Council Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia, and Yale British Art Collection. She currently lives and works in London.
Xenia brings together women from different backgrounds to connect, share and learn. In particular we welcome women learning English to participate alongside women who speak fluent English, using Xenia sessions as a time to connect with people you wouldn’t otherwise meet and learn about each other’s perspectives through friendship and shared learning. Each Saturday morning from 10am to 12pm, Xenia gather in Fierce and Fearless at Whitechapel Gallery to meet, exchange stories and learn English, using objects and stories from our shared histories. We welcome all women who want to drop in and join the session: https://www.xenia.org.uk/about
