Installation view of Nalini Malani: Can You Hear Me?, 23 September – 5 September 2021 at Whitechapel Gallery. Photo: Luke Walker.

To coincide with the ongoing exhibition, Nalini Malani: Can You Hear Me?, our Curator: Schools & Teachers, Alex Kais, paired up with artist Sam Ayre to deliver a digital GIF-making workshop with students at local primary schools.

Titled, You Will Hear Us!, the project launched with an ambition to engage with 600 students from 12 schools across Newham, informed by Malani’s new commission and love for animation.

Through their works below, the students explored themes of change, interconnection, language and drawing, reflecting upon key questions like: Why is English spoken so widely across the world even though England itself is a very small country? Do you like the world how it is or would you like to change it? How would you change something that you think is unfair?

Thank you to all schools that took part: Ellen Wilkinson Primary School, Selwyn Primary School, Curwen Primary School, Plaistow Primary School, Southern Road Primary School, Salisbury Primary School, Monega Primary School, St Winefrides Primary School, North Beckton Primary School, St. Edwards Primary School.
