Whitechapel Gallery was founded in 1901 to present “the finest art of the world for the people of the East End, London”. Now, more than 120 years later, we are renewing our commitment to this founding mission under the new directorship of Gilane Tawadros, recognising our pioneering history as a place for contemporary art and ideas that sits in the heart of London’s East End, and the opportunities this offers to collaborate and connect with global, diverse communities on our doorstep and around the world.
Dominique White (b. 1993. UK), winner of the ninth edition of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women (2022-2024), has begun her bespoke six-month residency in Italy, organised by Collezione Maramotti.
Max Mara, Whitechapel Gallery and Collezione Maramotti are delighted to announce Dominique White (b. 1993) as the winner of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.
Whitechapel Gallery presents Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940-70. The exhibition reaches beyond the predominantly white, male painters whose names are synonymous with the Abstract Expressionism movement, to discover the practices of numerous international women artists working with gestural abstraction in the aftermath of the Second World War.
Whitechapel Gallery announces Professor Mariana Mazzucato as the Gallery’s first Economist-in-Residence.
Joy Gregory with Whitechapel Gallery has won the Freelands Award 2023. This award enables organisations to present an exhibition by a mid-career female-identifying artist who may not yet have received the acclaim or public recognition that her work deserves.
Leading contemporary artists donate works for charitable Art Icon auction in support of Whitechapel Gallery’s education and community programmes.
