About This Event
This event takes place in the Fierce and Fearless installation in Gallery 5 at Whitechapel Gallery, located on the 1st floor and accessible via stairs and lift.
This workshop lasts approximately 2 hours. Attendees are encouraged to take as many breaks as they need during the event.
You must book a ticket to attend the event.
If the ticket price affects your attendance, please email tickets@whitechapelgallery.org to be added to the guest list (no questions asked, but dependent on availability).
This event is suitable for those over the age of 16.
We are unable to provide British Sign Language interpretation for this event.
We are unable to provide live closed captioning or CART for this event.
Transport
To the best of our knowledge, there are no planned disruptions to local transport on the date of the event.
Our nearest train station – Aldgate East Underground (1 min) is not wheelchair accessible. The closest wheelchair accessible stations are Whitechapel (15 min), Shoreditch High Street (15 min) or Liverpool Street (15 min).
Free parking for Blue Badge holders is available at the top of Osborn Street in the pay and display booths for an unlimited period. Spaces are available on a first come, first served basis.

Rooted in ideas around empowerment, female autonomy, and the building of transnational solidarities, 3EIB and Kazna Asker present a scarf customisation workshop, responding to the stories of witty wise women and folkloric figures in Joy Gregory’s Fierce and Fearless installation and beyond.
From Mami Wata, Moura Encantada, and Kali, to Queen Sheeba and Fatima al-Fihr, 3EIB and Kazna Asker will use these fierce characters and protagonists to reflect on female empowerment, archetypes and characters, and how we can build of our own counter-narratives to write ourselves into history.
Bringing together the protest symbolism of the scarf, with folklores, mythologies, and the cultures of resistance fundamental to Kazna’s own creative practice, this workshop invites participants to boldly emblazon their own scarves with embroidery, vinyl stickers, and mark making.
This event accompanies our current exhibition Joy Gregory: Catching Flies with Honey and takes place within Gregory’s Fierce and Fearless textile installation.
3EIB (“عيب“) is a community-led fashion platform and experimental events organiser amplifying creative practitioners from South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA) and its diaspora. Founded in September 2023, it spotlights independent brands and artists through curated projects and community-driven events.
The Arabic word “3eib” is a term historically used to silence those who challenge social norms. By reclaiming it, 3EIB embeds itself in a feminist legacy that confronts oppressive structures, dismantles stigma, and empowers individuals to express their identities unapologetically.
Note: ‘SWANA’ (South West Asia & North Africa) is the de-colonial and geographically accurate term for the area commonly referred to as The Middle East.
Kazna Asker is a fashion designer whose brand embodies the values of community, activism, and charity. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, she made history as the first designer to present a hijabi collection at the CSM MA Fashion Show in 2022.
Representing her home country of Yemen, Kazna received the Debut Talent Prize at Fashion Trust Arabia. She is also a BFC NEWGEN designer and has showcased her work at London Fashion Week for two seasons. Her designs merge traditional Yemeni fabrics with contemporary streetwear, all hand-sewn, creating a dialogue between heritage and modern identity.
