Learn how to make a film without a camera with not/nowhere!
In this tactile, hands-on workshop, inspired by floriography, joy in nature, our connection to the land, colonial histories, and alternative geographies, participants will explore how to tell a narrative story on film using free form direct animation.
Experimenting with 16mm film, you will work with both clear and black leader through drawing, scratching, and collage, using pens, inks, DIY tools, and archival and organic materials.
Participants’ results will be projected at the end of the workshop, followed by a short collective discussion and sharing.
No previous experience with film required – beginners, artists, and makers of all kinds are welcome!
Please note: this workshop is a low-stakes, playful space which centres and is open to people of colour and those who identify as being of the global majority.
This event accompanies our current exhibition Joy Gregory: Catching Flies with Honey.
not/nowhere is a black and POC-led artist workers’ co-op that supports analogue film practices with equipment hire, workshops, screenings and solidarity economics.
Leena Habiballa is a Sudanese artist and cultural worker working across moving image and experimental analogue practices. She is interested in Sudanese visual/material cultures, community filmmaking/exhibition models, and archival film practices that use state and colonial archives against themselves. Her work re-narrates various histories beyond a colonial imagination, offering counter-archival readings of the past and connections to the present. Leena is a Co-Director of the artist workers’ cooperative not/nowhere specialising in analogue practices. Her films have shown at Grand Union, Filma Feminist Film Festival, MENA Film Festival, Kurzfilmfestival Köln, Scribe Video Center and her writing has appeared in Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, Danish Film Institute, Art Monthly and LUX amongst others.
Samara Addai is a videographer, filmmaker and co-director at not/nowhere. Trailing onto 16mm filmmaking, her work has been part of the 15th Selected UK touring programme. Samara is also a camera assistant and loader in the world of short films, music videos and commercials.
