The Demolition Project (A-Z) involves a giant map of the city and an invitation to participants to demolish whatever they want – to cut out buildings, streets or entire areas. In return they must supply their reasons for the destruction, whether these are ideological, aesthetic or autobiographical. At the end, the result is a map full of holes and a word-map of memories, emotions and thoughts about the buildings that we live in and with. Along the way we invite conversations around why and how people would like to remake their city – or why they refuse to.
The Demolition Project is a collaboration between walking artist Alisa Oleva and writer-tour guide Debbie Kent. Their work together as The Demolition Project explores mapping, walking and urban life.
This project is part of Backyard Biennial.
