Writer in Residence 2016
Felix Melia

Using video, text and installation, Felix Melia’s work examines the conflict between our first-hand experiences and the narratives we use to represent them.

Over a series of events in 2016 as Whitechapel Gallery Writer in Residence, Felix Melia explored how changes in a virtually-inclined world impact on our bodies and the places we live; reflecting on the relationship between physical  and social movement, the abstraction of self and the shifting nature of representation.

Melia lives and works in London. His work stems from a conflict between primary experiences and the second hand narratives of representation. With a practice that incorporates video, sculpture and performance, Melia attempts to unpack and distill the metaphorical potential and representational significance of places and events as they impact upon the performance of the self and the processes of individuation. His work explores relationships between collective and corporeal movement, and the struggle to maintain agency.
