Whitechapel Gallery presents a new summer season: Life Is More Important Than Art

Taking inspiration from African American writer and novelist James Baldwin (b.1924, USA – d.1987, France), who observed that life is more important than art … and yet that is why art is important, Whitechapel Gallery presents a free three-month programme of collaborations with artists, performers and thinkers to examine the interface between art and everyday life, and connections between local and global concerns at a time of uncertainty and change.

Gilane Tawadros Appointed New Director of Whitechapel Gallery

16 May 2022 – Whitechapel Gallery is delighted to announce that curator and writer, Gilane Tawadros, has been appointed the new Director of Whitechapel Gallery, London. Currently Chief Executive of DACS, a not-for-profit visual artists' rights management organisation, and previously founding Director of the Institute of International Visual Arts (Iniva), Tawadros will take up her post in October 2022.
